Jeremy Frey

I wrote my first poem for an assignment in the winter of 1986 in Homer, Alaska. I've yet to write on a bathroom wall, but I read them, even critically analyzing them at times. I've just received the MFA in Creative Writing, having focused on poetry and literary nonfiction, from the University of Arizona, where I'm now an adjunct professor of composition (I'm composed) and rhetoric (I'm persuasive).

I am often aghast at some of my colleagues' revulsion at my and others' attempts to address religion in our work. While Carlyle and Gusler approach religion from a deeper, more-informed literary sense, I find my strengths in riling up the troops for revolution.

However, my largest concern in my own work is my tendency to also rile the apparent opposition; my literary friends. I'll need to figure this out, work this out through craft (it is the most useful criticism) before I then crusade against the true foe: the religious right, of course, but also the non-religious or anti-religious left. Where is our faith?

And, of course, as I continue the temporal and spiritual work which is writing, the mystics will continue their conversion of me: there is no enemy.
